What is Herbal Medicine?

Herbalism is the oldest, most tested and proven form of medicine in the world. It has been practised for over 4000 years by the people of Asia, India, China, Egypt, Africa and our own European origins arose from the Ancient Roman and Greek civilisations. Herbalism, when practised properly, is marked by a completely different attitude from orthodox medicine. It is a holistic therapy that uses plants or plant parts in a non-intrusive way.

Herbal medicines are made from extracts of the leaves, flowers, roots and other parts of plants and come in the form of tinctures, ointments, essential oils, infusions and decoctions. Unlike conventional pharmaceutical medicine the whole plant is used, rather than selecting single active ingredients.

Practitioners of Herbal Medicine take a holistic approach to disease, seeking out the underlying cause, rather than treating symptoms in isolation. The aim is to help the body restore its self-healing mechanism, so herbal remedies are tailored to the individual, not the symptoms.
Professional Consultant Herbalists can help most ailments treated by a family physician or general practitioner.
